Branches of Medicine
- Anatomy is a branch of medicine which studies about identification and description structure of the body and how its parts are arranged.
- Embriology is a branch of medicine which studies about development of an embryo from the stage of ovum fertilization through to the fetal stage.
- Epidemiology is a branch of medicine which studies about distribution and determination of health – related states or events (including disease), and the application of this study to the control of disease and other health problems.
- Histology is a branch of medicine which studies about the form of structures seen under the microscope (light, electron, infrared). Also called microscopic anatomy, as opposed to gross anatomy which involves structure that can be observed with the naked eye.
- Immunology is a branch of medicine which studies about of all aspects of the immune system, including its structure and fucntion, disorders of the immune system, blood banking, immunitation, and organ transplation.
- Surgery is a branch of medicine which studies about the treatment of injuries or diseases in people or animals by cutting open the body and removing or repairing the damaging part.
Abbreviations in Nursing
- GP : general practitioner : a doctor who provides general medical treatment for people who live in particular are.
- CSSD : Central Sterile Supply Department, is an integrated places in hospital an other health care facilities that perform sterilitation and other actions on medical devices, equipment and consumables for subsequent use by health workers in the operating theatre.
- ICU : Intensive Care Unit. The ICU is a disgnated area of a hospital facility that is dedicated to the care of patients who are seriously ill.
- p.c. : “post cibum” meaning after meals
- prn : “pro re nata", a Latin phrase meaning “as needed”. The administration times are determinde by the patient’s needs.
- HCU : is a service unit at the Hospital for patients with stable condition of the respiratory function, hemodynamic, and awareness but still require treatment, care and close monitoring.
- bid : b.i.d means twice a day. It is an abbreviation for “bis in die”.
- BTCLS : Basic Trauma Cardiac Life Support.
- NANDA : North Amrican Nursing Diagnosis Association. A professional organitation of registered nurses created in 1982. The purpose of the organitation is to develope, refine, promote a taxonomy of nursing diagnosticterminology of general use to the professional.
- ENT : A department in a hospital that deals wwith diseases affecting the ear, nose, and throat.

- Radiologyis the branch of medicine that deals with radiant energy in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
- Psychologyis the branch of medicine that study of behavior and mind, embracing all aspects of conscious and unconscious experience as well as thought.
- Dermatology is the branch of medicine about dealing with the skin, nails, hair and its diseases.
- Gynecology is the branch of physiology and medicine that deals with the functions and diseases specific to women and girls, especially those affecting the reproductive system.
- Dentistry is a branch of medicine that is involved in the study, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases, disorders and conditions of the oral cavity, commonly in the dentition but also the oral mucosa, and of adjacent and related structures and tissues, particularly in the maxillofacial (jaw and facial) area.
- Orthopedics is the field of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of the musculosketetal system, particularly the spine, joints, and muscles.
Abbreviations in Nursing
- NICU (A neonatal intensive care unit ) is an intensive care unit specializing in the care of ill or premature newborn infants.
- PICU (A pediatric intensive care unit) usually abbreviated to PICU is an area within a hospital specializing in the care of critically ill infants, children, and teenagers.
- HDN : A high dependency unit is an area in a hospital, usually located closely to the intensive care unit, where patients can be cared for more extensively than on a normal ward, but not to the point of intensive care, it is appropriate for patients who have had major surgery and for those with single-organ failure.
- TBC is infectious disease of the respiratory tract caused by bacteria.
- tid : “ter in die” means three times a day.
- qid : “quarter in day” means four times a day.
- po : “per os” meaning by mouth and oraly.
- tab : tablet, a solid dosage form containing medicinal substances with or without suitable diluents
- ROM (Range of Motion). The range of motion of a joint from full extension to full lexion (bending) measured in degrees like a circle.
